Description

With the latest advancements in Charged Particle Lance technology, the Desolator Class Anti-Gravity Main Battle Tank was designed and adopted by the Saurian Kingdom's Army and Fallschirmjaeger Armored units. Similar to the previous Main Battle tanks of the Saurian Kingdom, the vehicle was hover. However, the addition of the Charged Particle Lance... rather than a true lazer or projectile cannon was a radical change in design that threw the Therion Minarchy into a rather difficult position. A powerful 'alpha strike' weapon, it was designed to be able to punch through an enemy tank and disable it with it's first strike. This however rendered the preliminary and early models to having a very slow rate of fire.

This problem was solved by a Saurian weapons designer who developed a new type of Particle charging array and condenser, which was mounted atop the Particle accelerator... commonly referred to as the 'barrel' of the weapon. This unit held pre-charged ions and particles for what could best de described as a three shot 'cassette'. This was in effort to counter the revolver cannons the Therion Minarchy currently arms it's main battle tanks with, which were taking advantage of the slow rate of fire on a miss, or in groups of tanks, to quickly tear a Desolator to shreds with multiple, quick shots. While this allows for a quick 'three shot burst' against three different targets, once the pre-charger has been expended the weapon is relegated to it's much slower normal firing rate, requiring a lengthy pause in the battle with no firing to rebuild the charge in the pre-charger.

The Main gun of the Desolator is huge, and while it has an impressive amount of gun elevation - It does not have very much gun depression. This problem is caused not only to the large amount of the vehicle's hull forward of the turret, but also due to the pre-charger mounted atop the barrel. While original desolators had problems firing downwards at targets, the problem was found to be not with the tank, but with the training of the gunners and drivers. By energizing the aft anti-gravity units, they could elevate the rear end of the tank higher, causing the entire tank to nose downward. This allowed the gun to have a higher, if not nigh-unlimited amount of gun depression to near vertical amounts.

The Desolator's high speed, responsive handling and high maneuverability allow it near unmatched cross country pass-ability. However, the vehicle relies on it's gun to protect itself, as the armor is rather lackluster to a true main battle tank - a fault that gives it survivability more akin to a Medium tank rather than an MBT. Despite this, it's speed, maneuverability, and the ability for it's gun to quickly and efficiently take out targets in one to two shots is favorable. It's armor, while not spectacular against other purpose-built Main Battle tanks or tank destroyers is more than enough to handle light vehicles, and infantry launched anti-tank weapons.

This is probably my favourite "conventional" design for ground armour I've seen.
